There has been an artist's garret... a gentleman's office at the beach.... a countryside terrace celebrating the first harvest... a Park Avenue houseboat (in a nod to global warming), a French music salon...a study featuring Mary Tyler Moore's tarot collection....a meditation room that subtly changed colors as you passed it....even a high-ceilinged private chapel.
In the twenty-nine years of Rooms with a View, volunteers have erected and disassembled Over three-hundred show house vignettes, each one measuring six-by-eight with three sheetrock walls, a ceiling, and electricity. A virtual Who's Who of interior designers have plastered, wallpapered, trompe l'oeil ed, stuccoed, mirrored, striéd, lacquered and paneled their three walls plus laid parquet, sisal, antique tile, marble, limestone, and carpet, then built bookcases, windows and sometimes fireplaces before installing furnishings, drapery, antiques, objects, and art.
A CONCEPT IS BORN
In the 1980’s and early 90’s the Southport Antiques Show was the church's long-running fundraiser. By 1993 the overwhelming opinion was that antiques shows were over and a new concept needed to be developed. A committee was formed and after months of debate over what to do next a new concept was born. The idea was to develop a mini decorator's show house with vignettes or small concept rooms of design. The event would be a place where people could connect with designers and find sources for furnishings, fixtures, paint and art.
Being a new and untried idea the concept was met with an equal mix of excitement and skepticism. What’s a vignette?
ENTER THE DEAN OF AMERICAN DESIGN
Albert Hadley, who had a weekend house in Southport, was a member of the church. When the committee approached him with this idea, Mr. Hadley overwhelmingly endorsed the idea and agreed to help refine the concept. From 1993 until his death, Mr. Hadley became a tireless participant, the hands-on design director as well as the show's calling card and honorary chairman.
Hadley invited the designers personally and chose them very carefully. He developed a formula, which is still used today, six men, six women; six New York, six Fairfield County; six established, six new. For him, the excitement was always in the six new designers. He had an eye for spotting talent early - proof of that is when you look at the RWAV alumni list for the past 25 years - many of designers were at the very beginning of what has become a celebrated career. Thom Filicia, our current honorary chairman, was one such designer.
Believing that beauty could be found everywhere, he created vignettes using items exclusively from the Carousel Thrift Shop. Many years, the Thrift Shop vignette as curated by Mr. Hadley, would sell out several times over during the course of the weekend.

Thanks to the vision of that committee and Mr. Hadley’s help, Rooms with a View has raised over $2.0 million dollars to support a host of local charities.
As we look to the future our goal is to continue to present the best in art and design.
